GD_9-21-07_294You might know someone in your life who is an avid gardener. This person might be a novice who simply like to plant flowers on his or her property or he or she might be more of a horticulture enthusiast who has planned every aspect of the garden down to the smallest details, including garden décor. One column in The Vancouver Sun gives some ideas for Christmas presents for gardeners, and this list focuses mainly on practical items, such as a trolley to move heavy potted plants and a blower for flower petals to keep the garden tidy. Décor, however, is included in this list, with wind chimes being one such idea.

Wind chimes are seen as the quintessential gardener’s gift. After all, what garden is complete without a set of copper wind chimes? Unfortunately, this association of plants and ambient music often means most gardeners already have a set of wind chimes in the area. A garden, as we’ve mentioned before, can be planned down to the more minute detail without being tacky (read: no yard gnomes or plastic animals) and if you’re looking for a unique garden Christmas gift for someone who already has wind chimes, here are some suggestions:

• Rain chains – place one of these over a gutter and down into your garden area and an ordinary spout of water is transformed into something far more beautiful.
• Hose pots – use a copper pot to disguise unsightly objects like hoses and garden tools that detract from the beauty of the plants and flowers.
• Garden stakes – add one of these subtle stakes to the garden for slight embellishments. If you need animals or insects in your garden, this is a great way to add them without taking away from the arrangement of the plants and flowers.
• Leaderheads – add one of these copper accents to collect rainwater in addition to other garden ornaments.
