So far, we’ve explored the various sizes of weathervanes offered at HG Lifestyle, including large or “estate” weathervanes, cottage weathervanes, and every other size in between. Recently, HG has introduced another type, custom weathervanes, which resemble more copper artwork than traditional weathervanes. Like all types, these can be placed on a roof, barn, gazebo, or garden and are made with the same type of craftsmanship as all smaller sizes. Customization for these, however, involves creating a new and unique design never seen before on weathervanes and, often, two or more smaller types from HG are combined to form a larger one.
This doesn’t mean that two weathervanes are simply welded together and left at that. As mentioned before, craftsmanship – as well as the functionality – of the weathervane is important, and this is taken into account when designing each. Each custom design depicts a scene that is composed of several smaller shapes added together. Such examples include double weathervanes which includes dolphins, biplanes, and ducks in the selection of designs. Triple shapes are a similar option, as well. Other designs combine two dissimilar shapes that interact with each other, such as a duck and a gun. Often, these shapes are positioned on an arrow to indicate the direction of the wind.
The functionality of a weathervane depends on the proportions of weight and area on each side. The artisan behind such weathervanes, in addition to the artistic aspect, needs to keep in mind that the weight on both sides of a weathervane needs to be equal but the area on both sides should not be. All of these weathervanes, as you can see in the pictures of them on HG’s site, are all crafted from copper but still keep up these proportions which become disguised by the high level of craftsmanship put into them.
